What I Ordered
Chicken Pumpkin Curry
$20
The pumpkin curry was one of the seasonal offerings when I visited Sumittra Thai. It was a red curry with chunks of roasted pumpkin, chicken, bell peppers and Thai basil. The curry is served with a scoop of jasmine rice. I really enjoyed the curry and the pumpkin. It was an interesting combination with a rich savory result. I found the chicken was a little dry. As a whole, I really enjoyed the dish. The curry really carried the team. The presentation was beautiful with a unique tear drop shaped plate. I do think the large surface area made it more difficult to spoon up the curry than a traditional bowl, but it was attractive.
Thai Tea
$5
The thai tea was alright, but not mind blowing. Thai tea consists of black tea and cream. It was not very creamy and had a lot of ice.
Overall Food
Overall, I thought the Thai food at Sumittra was OK. The curry itself was delicious with a complex savory flavor. Also, they have very good presentation with unique dishware. However, some of the elements were overcooked and the Thai tea was unimpressive. Additionally, the curry was not spicy at all.
Service
The staff were very friendly. I was seated right away, however immediately after it me the wait time climbed to an hour. Additionally, the kitchen was very busy with takeout orders, so it appeared to slow down the dining room. I found they were quick to take my order but it took a while to receive my food. They did check back quickly to see how the food was and get my check. If you want to eat at Sumittra on a weekend I would recommend timing it to avoid the main dinner rush.
Atmosphere
Size
Sumittra is a very small restaurant. They have about 20 tables inside and a few tables outside which are arranged pretty close together.
Who Goes Here?
There were couples on dates as well as groups of friends and families.
Overall Atmosphere
Sumittra Thai is a cozy establishment. I found the atmosphere to be energetic and comfortable. The décor is colorful and eclectic. In some ways the dining experience is more formal with cloth napkins, nice silverware, and high-end dishes. However, the seating and ambience are fairly casual. You could go with causal dress or dress up a little to dine at Sumittra.
They do not have a waiting area when you enter, so people tend to build up in the doorway at the host podium. A bathroom is available, but it is a strange arrangement. It is a shared restroom with a neighboring restaurant in the hall behind the stores. There is only one men’s and one women’s stall and they are large. The restrooms are in good shape but not very tidy.
Location
The location of Sumittra is good. It is in downtown Frederick, MD. There is not a parking lot, but there are inexpensive parking garages available. Many shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues are within walking distance.

Value for money
I think that Sumittra is not a great value for your money. The food is decent and the serving sizes are fair, but neither are particularly impressive. Additionally, they have some elements of a fine dining experience, but everything is a bit shabby and congested, so I don’t think it deserves a fine dining price tag. Therefore, I think it is slightly overpriced for what you are getting.
Overall
Sumittra Thai is in Downtown Frederick, MD. It skates on the line between casual and fine dining. The dining room is small and a bit congested. I found the food to be mediocre, but I did enjoy their curry.
