Summary

This week I tried out Pizza Twist in Winchester, VA. They offer traditional pizzas, as well as Indian Fusion Pizzas, and Halal Pizzas. I wanted to try their unique offerings so I opted for the Indian Fusion Masala fries and pizza. I used takeout so I did not experience their storefront, though I know they are newer establishment.

What I Ordered

Masala Fries

2/5

$9

The masala fries came in a carboard box with ranch on the side. I though the serving size was large for one person but small for a group. The fries were covered in a masala sauce including onion, garlic, and ginger. For the most part I enjoyed the flavor, but I thought they used too much ginger. It was overpowering. Additionally, I ordered “Extra Spicy” and they were not hot at all.  Lastly, the fries were soggy, dark, and greasy so I think they oil was not hot enough when they were fried. Overall, I thought they were OK I just wish the oil was hotter when they were fried.

Chicken Tikka Masala Pizza

1.5/5

$18

The chicken tikka masala pizza looked great. Presentation was good and the toppings were very well distributed across the pie. There was a bit of everything in each bite. The pizza included chicken, onion, bell pepper, mushroom, and masala sauce. The crust was good with a nice texture and thickness. There was a ton of mozzarella cheese on top.

However, the overall flavor was not good. It almost seemed like the sauce between the cheese and crust was missing. It was all bread and cheese and felt like it was missing the moisture and acidity of the sauce. Also, there was too much ginger, overpowering the other flavors. All I could taste was ginger and garlic. The end flavor was almost musky and I was not a fan. Additionally, I opted for “Spicy” and it was not spicy.  I was disappointed that the pizza did not have the rich depth and creamy profile that Tikka Masala normally has. I would not recommend the Masala Pizza.

Overall Food

2/5

I was very excited to try Indian Fusion pizza, because I love Indian cuisine and a good pizza. But I found myself quite disappointed. Overall, I did not like the food I tried at Pizza Twist.  The attempts at Indian flavors were just not good. There was too much ginger in everything. It seemed like the flavors needed reformulated and they could have benefited from a good sauce. Also, even though I opted for spicy nothing was even vaguely spicy.  Additionally, the fries were dark and greasy.  I did think the crust of the pizza was good. I think their traditional pizzas like peperoni would be pretty good.

I thought that Pizza Twist was reasonably priced. The Indian flavors were just not right and weren’t good. The serving sizes were also not large.  I think if you get a normal pizza, such as peperoni, it would be a fair value.

Overall

2/5

Overall, I was disappointed in my experience with Pizza Twist in Winchester, VA. I was excited to try Indian Pizza Fusion. But the flavor choices just did not work and did not really resemble Tikka Masala. I would not recommend the Masala options on the menu. If you were going to eat at Pizza Twist, I would suggest a normal pizza like peperoni.
