What I Ordered

Creamy Chicken Ramen

3/5

$15

I ordered the creamy chicken ramen for dinner. This ramen was composed of a creamy broth, roasted chicken, bamboo shoots, kikurage mushrooms, corn, fish cakes, seaweed, bean sprouts, and boiled egg. There is only one size from what I could tell and the serving is huge! You will not leave hungry.

The overall flavor is interesting and complex. The broth is quite savory and the seaweed adds a lot of salinity. I found bites of seaweed made it a bit too salty for my taste, so I decided to eat around it. Additionally, the bamboo shoots add a sort of funkiness. Other ingredients added a variety of textures and flavors. I especially enjoyed the mushrooms, chicken, and sprouts.  Overall, I enjoyed the ramen and think that it offers a wide variety of flavors and textures. It also feels healthy but has the warmth of comfort food at the same time.

Taro Slushy

3.5/5

$6.55

The taro slushy is a tasty, sweet treat. It has the unique creamy flavor of taro and the texture of a frappe. The menu says it is served with a cheese foam on top, but honestly this tasted like whipped cream to me. I thought the serving size was very generous. Additionally, this drink is served in an adorable cup. The lid has teddy bear ears that go with the business’s teddy bear logo. You can keep the cup!

Overall Food

3.5/5

Overall, I enjoyed my meal at Kuma Moon. Everything tasted fresh and flavorful. It was very filling and nourishing. I think next time I would try the spicy ramen to add even more flavor dimension to it. My favorite thing was their presentation and the adorable custom take-home cups.

Service

4/5

The servers checked back regularly to take orders and ask if I needed anything. I thought the staff were very friendly and helpful. Each table comes with a self-service bottle of water, napkins, and utensils. The food was brought out quickly and accurately. It looked like the tables were cleared quickly after customers left.

Overall Atmosphere

3/5

Kuma Moon is a small ramen shop in Blacksburg, VA near the Virginia Tech Math Emporium. It is clean and looks relatively new. The restaurant has an open concept where you can see the kitchen from the tables and the bar overlooks the kitchen. It is fun to see your food prepared. There is an area to put in to go orders and pick up at the entrance.  Their overall design is simple and reminds me of Moe’s Southwest Grill. It is a good place to grab a quick casual dinner with friends, family, or solo.

Location

4.5/5

The location of Kuma Moon has its pros and cons. For myself, as a non-student I thought the location was great. There is ample free parking available. The buses stop just outside. Additionally, there are hotels and shops nearby. However, I think if you are a student at Virginia Tech, it is a bit outside of campus, so it could be less convenient. I would not suggest walking from campus. However, students can easily take the Math Empo bus to visit Kuma Moon.
