The banana split consists of three kinds of ice cream. You can choose which flavors, for example, chocolate, vanilla, twist, or the flavor of the day. I tried chocolate, vanilla, and red velvet. The chocolate was my favorite of the three but they were all rich and creamy. Additionally, this sundae was piled high with toppings including a banana, strawberry and pineapple fruit topping, nuts, chocolate syrup, and whipped cream with a cherry on top. The serving is huge! It could be a meal on its own or great for sharing.
Orange Creamsicle Cone

This is the orange creamsicle flavored custard in a cake cone. I found the custard really did taste exactly like an orange creamsicle but even more creamy and rich. Anyone who likes those popsicles would love this flavor.
Blackberry Cobbler Cone

I also tried the blackberry cobbler custard in a cake cone. The custard flavor reminded me of the taste of having a bite of blackberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream all on one bite. It was very fruity, flavorful, and creamy.

Overall, the custard at Mattie’s is first rate. They have a very concise menu. Each day they offer chocolate, vanilla, twist, and one or two unique flavors of the day. If you really want to fully appreciate one flavor of custard, I would suggest a cone or a cup of it. The banana split is a great deal and very tasty, but the flavors tend to muddle together.
The flavors are well formulated and taste exactly like what they are called. Additionally, nothing tastes overly artificial and I did not see and artificial colors added. I thought all the custard flavors are decadent, rich, and creamy. The serving sizes are good as well.

The service provided at Mattie’s is good but limited. There is a walk-up window where you order your desserts. Then another employee calls the prepared orders and hands out the food at a second window. I have found the employees to be very happy and friendly each time I have visited. They are also happy to provide recommendations.

Mattie’s is a very simple store front. It consists of a walk-up window for ordering and picking up custard treats. There are only a few benches for people to sit at and no tables. I think they would benefit from some tables but I am not sure that they have space for them outside. Also, it was very clean inside and outside. The overall atmosphere is jovial and pleasant. However, it is a to-go setting, not a comfy place you would want to spend a longer length of time. I would suggest grabbing your ice cream and eating in your car or taking it home.

Mattie’s is in an older shopping center in Winchester, VA. The shop is a drive-up location with plenty of parking. It is not in walking distance to and hotels, shops, or entertainment. However, there are a lot of other businesses a short drive away.
