The Desperado Burger is a large hand-formed beef patty topped with bacon, onion rings, jalapenos, and BBQ sauce. This is a very savory, indulgent burger that could satisfy anyone looking for an American classic with a twist. They do not skimp on the toppings. It had a couple onion rings and fresh crispy bacon. It was piled high with pickled jalapenos, which I enjoyed. The acidity of the pickled jalapenos helps to balance out all the fat of the burger. The serving was large generous and the price was reasonable. Come hungry!

I got sweet potato fries as my side with the Desperado burger. They were served with a honey sauce and a “gonzo sauce” on the side. I though these were a very tasty side. The fries were thick cut but very crisp. The sweet potato flavor came through nicely providing the sweet/savory flavor. The honey sauce was very flavorful and tasty but it is quite sweet. The “gonzo sauce” is a savory sauce similar to the popular “fry sauce” found in the Midwest US.

Overall, the food at Gonzoburger was very flavorful. It was not for someone on a diet as it was on the greasy side with large servings, but it was very tasty. Additionally, they have a full bar available for those looking for a drink with their meal. Gonzoburger would satisfy anyone craving a good burger in Charleston, WV.

The service at Gonzoburger was fantastic. I was sat quickly received my food quickly. The waitress was very kind, friendly, and attentive. I was pleasantly surprised when the owner came out and asked me how my Desperado Burger was and if I needed anything else. He was very kind and friendly. He may have been the cook too, I’m not sure. Overall, I was impressed by how nice the staff were and how much they obviously cared about their customers.

Who Goes Here?
I visited in the afternoon, so I didn’t see their usual customers. Moreover, it would be a good place to grab lunch for a business person or family. I would imagine in the evening it’s a great place for family or friends to grab a drink and a burger.
Overall Atmosphere
Gonzoburger has a very interesting atmosphere. It has a multitude of historic features from the bar to the tray ceilings to the antique tile floor. If you visit their website, it mentions they kept a lot of elements from the originally 1910’s confectionary that was there prior. I though these details were really neat. There are also a lot of interesting art pieces, possibly local art, along the walls. It is a very casual dining experience. I gather it is a pretty popular bar in the evenings because I noticed it was a bit sticky and the smelled like a bar. Therefore, it could potentially use a bit more cleaning. However, I enjoyed the atmosphere overall and found the historic interior charming.

Gonzoburger is located right in downtown Charleston, WV. It is part of a very pretty, historic block with several shops and eateries. Unfortunately, there is not much parking available in the area.
