Summary

Oak Stone Craft Pizza and Bar is a nice dine-in restaurant, offering wood-fired pizza in Winchester, VA. It offers traditional Italian offerings and pizzas as well as some unique pizzas. We tried some of the unique pizza offerings. They have tasty food, though they don’t load their pizzas up as much as I am used to. Their service is very good and the atmosphere is airy, energetic, and elevated.

What I Ordered

Kung Pao Veggies

4/5

$10

The kung pao veggies are tempura fried veggies tossed in sweet and spicy kung pao sauce. The veggies included cauliflower, broccoli, carrot, and celery. I would recommend this appetizer. It was very tasty and flavorful but not that spicy. The sauce is similar to a mild, creamy sweet chili sauce. The veggies still had a nice crunch to them. The celery was a different experience than the other veggies. It burst with flavor and juice when you bit into it. Very tasty!

Birria Taco Pizza (10”)

3.5/5

$17.50

The taco pizza was pretty good and unusual. This pizza consists of crust topped with a red sauce, BBQ beef, tomatoes, jalapenos, onion, and cheese served with a birria sauce. The description mentioned crushed tortilla chips on top but we didn’t have any on ours. The woodfired crust was great. The BBQ beef was very flavorful and delicious. I just wished there was more of the meat and it was more evenly distribute across the pizza. The tomatoes were too large and raw, they just fell off the pizza when you picked it up. It would have been better diced smaller. This pizza could have used more cheese too. The dipping sauce was a very gentle savory sauce, almost like an au jous. It tasted nice but honestly you couldn’t taste it next to the other flavors in the pizza when you used it. I don’t think it really added to the pizza. Overall, it was a tasty pizza that tasted like a BBQ taco crossed with a pizza it just could have used more of the toppings.

Verona Pizza (10”)

2/5

$15.50

I was not impressed by the Verona Pizza. It sounded good and looked good. It is a wood fired crust covered in red sauce, fresh mozzerela, roasted eggplant, tomato, fresh basil, olives, and pistachios. Unfortunately, it lacked flavor. Also, the pistachios didn’t always work. If you got a mouthful with basil and pistachios together it was good. But without the basil the pistachios didn’t fit into the flavor profile and were an odd crunch chunky aspect that tended to fall off. The tomatoes were too big again and would fall off.  The roasted egg plant was quite good but there wasn’t very much of it. The flavor was very olive forward. Overall, I though the flavor profile of this pizza was lacking.

Overall, the food at Oak Stone is pretty tasty.  The wood fired crust and fresh ingredients are delicious. Though I was not as impressed by verona pizza, I think the other pizzas with more traditional toppings would be quite good.

The service at Oak Stone was fantastic. The waitress was lovely and friendly. She was quick and very attentive. She also checked back periodically and refilled our water often. The food also came out quickly.

Atmosphere

Size

Oak Stone is a medium size restaurant. There are about 10 tables of outdoor patio seating available in the warmer months. There are about 20-30 tables inside and a full bar. There is almost always a wait to be seated.

Who Goes Here?

Families, groups of friends, couples on dates visit.  Also many individuals sit at the bar.

Overall Atmosphere

4/5

The atmosphere in Oak Stone is very enjoyable. It is new, clean and airy. The tables are nicely spaced and there are plenty of windows. The décor is an eclectic industrial style that is clean and uncluttered but quite unique. The atmosphere is very lively and great for hanging out with friends and family or going on a date. Even though they serve pizza, it is a little more elevated atmosphere, sot it would be good for dates and nice outings. However, it is still a casual dining experience.

Location

3/5

Oak Stone is in a good location on the outskirts of downtown Winchester, Virginia in a small plaza. It is right across from the stunning high school in Winchester. There is parking available but the parking lot is always too full. There is not quite enough parking for how popular they are. It is also fairly tight parking so it might be tough to park a larger pickup truck. We walked to avoid the hassle.

Value for money

I think Oak Stone offers decent value for your money. Though the menu is more expensive than getting takeout pizza, the ingredients are high quality, the offering are unique, and the service and atmosphere are very nice. I think it is definitely worth the price.

Overall

4/5

Overall, Oak Stone is a good place to get pizza in Winchester, VA. It offers traditional and unique pizzas, as well as Italian entrees. The pizzas we tried had good crusts and were pretty good. Though they weren’t loaded with as many toppings as they could have been. Also, the Verona pizza was not my cup of tea and I would not personally recommend ordering it. Considering the crust/sauce/cheese/meat were really good, I think the traditional pizzas would be great. I would recommend the kung pao veggie appetizer, it was very tasty. I enjoyed the clean, airy and energetic atmosphere as well as the great service. I would recommend stopping in for a date or a get together with good food and drinks.
