Rockheim Museum - Trondheim, NO
Rockheim is a music museum in Trondheim, Norway. It is a new, high-tech, and interactive museum. It is a great way to learn and experience Norwegian music throughout history. Most of the features have earmuff headphones to put on to listen to the music. There is one main floor that has all of the museum elements.
Museum Features
Music Videos Through the Ages
When you first enter the museum floor from the elevator there are three large screens. There are projected symbols on the floor that you can stand or wave to select a time period, ie. 50’s, 60’s, 90’s. When an era is selected the screens can play music videos from famous bands in that era.
Walk Through Time
There are several rooms set up with antiques. Each room depicts a different era. You can look at the technology, instruments, and media. These are fun to look at but not as interactive. They were nice but not as impressive as other parts of the museum.
Black Metal Room
There is a room set up to replicate the original practice space of the black metal band Mayhem. They were the first black metal band in the world and were from Norway. This room was really well designed. Not only was the replica spot on compared to historic photos, there were really neat interactive elements. There was a cassette player that you could put cassettes in that were labeled with black metal bands. When you put a tape in, the large screen in the room would play live recordings and music videos of that band. It was very well designed!
Car Ride
There is a section of the museum that is set up to be like riding on a bus and you can select to see music videos and media in the windows and lap screens.
Turn Tables
There were really interesting interactive features to the museum involving turn tables. There were vinyl records with labels that you can put on the turn table to view different information. You spin the turn table to move forward or backward through information. The information included text to read, videos, and music.
Who Goes Here?
Anyone interested in learning about Norwegian music or music history would enjoy this museum. Also fans of modern interactive museums would enjoy the experience.
Venue
The museum is very new and modern. The interactive elements worked very well. There were nice restrooms available. There was a restaurant available on the top of the building with a nice view. It is a very large spacious museum. There is a gift shop in the lobby.
Location
We walked to Rockheim from town. I did not notice any easy places to park nearby. I would recommend using public transportation or walking. It is a bit outside of downtown near the water.
